Description An account of the resource Although the storekeeper of Cutler Mercantile Co. in Cutler, Calif., also served as postmaster and as the agent for a nearby laundry, he still found time to serve as librarian for the Tulare County Library System. Cutler Mercantile was opened soon after Frank Shinoda arrived from Japan in 1905. It burned down in 1919 and was replaced by a larger brick building. Currently (2006), that building houses La Esperanza Restaurant. Funded by a grant from the California State Library, the "Shades" project is a collection of more than 300 photographs provided by the Chinese and Japanese residents of Tulare County. Spanning the decades from the late nineteenth century until the present day, these images are a representation of the history and heritage of the Chinese and Japanese residents of Tulare County. Photographs of farm life, early businesses, athletics, the Visalia flood of 1955, the Japanese relocation camps, and family groups are just some of the varied elements of this collection. Description An account of the resource The Shinoda general store in Cutler, California, in the 1930s. The original store was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt in 1919. The building, located at Road 128 and Railroad Drive, is currently occupied by La Esperanza Mexican Restaurant. The store was built by Kuzo Shinoda, maternal grandfather of Eileeen Abe-Liesias.
