The Butterfield marker, placed in 1958, commemorates the overland trail used for mail from 1858 to 1881, as part of the Stockton to Los Angeles segment of the St. Louis to San Francisco route.  The Fremont marker celebrates one of the paths of General John C. Fremont in his explorations.</text>
