Description An account of the resource Content Description This is the restored residence of Colonel and Mrs. Allen Allensworth in Allensworth, CA. The colonel was a self-taught, Kentucky-born slave who eventually became a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and a chaplain at the San Francisco Presidio. The Allensworth colony was established in 1909 near a railroad switch known as Solito in Tulare County, CA. It was formed for the betterment of African-Americans, and was well promoted. By 1910 somoe stores and a Zion Methodist Church had been built, and a one-room schoolhouse was erected in 1912 and attended by about 20 students.
