Description An account of the resource The Giant Sequoia called the General Grant Tree, the world's third-largest sequoia after the General Sherman tree and the Washington tree. The tree was discovered in 1862 by Joseph Hardin Thomas and named in 1867 by Lucretia Baker. Charles E. Lee of Sanger organized the first Christmas Day celebration at the tree in 1925. The following year President Coolidge designated the General Grant Tree as the "Nation's Christmas Tree" on 28 April 1926. On 29 March 1956 President Eisenhower proclaimed the tree as a living memorial to those who have died serving their country with a dedication ceremony held on Veterans Day, 11 November 1956.
